Magento 1 - 2 Migration for Counter Editions

The Client – Counter Editions

Margate based Counter Editions commissions and produces prints and multiples by leading international contemporary artists. They are the leading website for buying contemporary art in the UK and EU.

The Brief – Magento 1 to Magento 2 Migration

The three Counter Editions website were originally Magento 1 websites. When Magento 1 was reaching its end date in June 2020, Counter Editions realised they were going to need to move their sites to a new platform. When researching local digital marketing agencies, they came across ExtraDigital and approached us.

They needed the three storefronts: https://www.countereditions.com/eu/, https://www.countereditions.com/uk/, and https://www.countereditions.com/us/ migrated to Magento 2 keeping the existing design, (with one minor change to some arrows).

The Work

The design quality was a crucial aspect of this work, requiring the exact design matched in both desktop and mobile views, with close attention to detail. The current stores had many modules and some custom backend functionality that needed replicating in the new website, as well as creating four new custom modules.

Module 1- Dynamic Pricing

The client required a custom module that allowed prices to change based on the quantity that was left. We created a custom module that gave the ability to set prices per products based on stock levels for multiple currencies.

Module 2 – Custom Photo Gallery Product

We created a separate image gallery on product pages – as seen here under the descriptions of each product. This custom gallery allows them to show the production process of each product – more than you would get from typical eCommerce platforms where you only have the product image galleries.

Module 3 – FileMaker API

FileMaker is the inventory system that the client uses; we needed to allow the new website to be able to send and receive data from it. There are no modules that allow you to do this, so it was done using a custom API (application programming interface) integration.

Module 4 - Quote

The last custom module to be built was to allow admin to place an order and then send to the customer for them to make payment.

The payment gateway used was Braintree – we implemented this making sure it was working correctly with the site, inventory API, and that the correct distribution/inventory workflows were being triggered.

As we mentioned before – there were three storefronts originally. Instead of creating three new Magento 2 storefronts, we created one website that would change depending on your VPN (where you are accessing the internet). So if you were browsing the site from an EU country – you would see the EU version, including euro pricing.

The End Result

After extensive testing and several months of hard, detailed work, the new Magento 2 site is live and running smoothly. The site is GDPR compliant, responsive, mobile-friendly and SSL registered. Both US and EU storefronts displaying to the correct countries, sales have gone through, and the correct workflows have been triggered
